Lummis Urges Federal Railroad Administration to Extend Comment Period on Minimum Crew Size Requirements for Railroads

September 20, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) wrote a letter to Administrator Amit Bose of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) urging him to extend the comment period for the proposed rule for train crew size safety requirements to allow Wyoming railroad operators and stakeholders reasonable time to respond to the proposed regulations.

“It is critical that affected businesses, particularly small businesses, be afforded a reasonable opportunity to assess how this proposal would affect their operations so they can provide you with substantive and meaningful comments,” wrote Senator Lummis. “Many stakeholders that would be affected by this rule have focused their resources in recent weeks on the potential labor strike that would have crippled the railroad industry and our economy more broadly.”

This rule would have a disproportionate impact on short line railroads, such as Bighorn Divide & Wyoming Railroad which operates in central Wyoming.
