WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Western Caucus Chair Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) gave opening remarks at the Western Caucus Foundation’s Forestry and Wildfire Policy Summit today. She focused her remarks on the essential role forests play in Wyoming and western economies as well as the risk that forest mismanagement plays in western states.
“Wyoming is home to hundreds of thousands of acres of forests, and our national forests are a huge economic driver for our state. However, these forests can only continue to be an economic driver if they are properly cared for, managed, maintained and harvested. I am fighting to make sure that Wyoming forests are included in plans that prioritize responsible conservation instead of radical environmentalism,” said Senator Lummis.
Senator Lummis also highlighted the need for commonsense forest management legislation such as the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act as well as her efforts to include Wyoming in the Forest Service’s Ten Year Wildfire Defense Strategy Plan.
The Western Caucus Foundation Forestry & Wildfire Summit was hosted by Senate Western Caucus Chair Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Congressional Western Caucus Chair Dan Newhouse (R-WA) in conjunction with the Western Caucus Foundation to create opportunities for dialogue between western states and Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management staffs.
Wyoming contains eight national forests and approximately 263,000 acres of state-managed forests. State and national forests provide opportunities for camping, hiking and hunting as well as a robust and essential timber industry.
